3 Benefits of Being Sober

Benefits of Sobriety

Thinking about quitting the drink and weighing the benefits of being sober? If you are thinking about moderating or quitting drinking, you’re probably thinking about the negative things it is doing to your life. If it was still working, you wouldn’t think about quitting. The good news is there is a huge upside to being sober. Along with the overall peace of mind and absence of the alcoholic chaos, there are some amazing benefits.  Below are my top 3 benefits of being sober

1. No More Hangovers

My hangovers were terrible, day long, dead-to-the-world, miserable, debilitating hangovers. I guess after drinking the quantities I drank it was to be expected. Out drinking the hangover never worked for me either. I would try to drink in the morning to stop the hangover but unfortunately (or fortunately) it never worked. It just made the hangover worse. The only thing that would make it better was a greasy brunch.. which leads us to number two.

2. Your Health Improves

Food choices improve, sleep improves, your complexion improves, alcohol contains sugar so removing alcohol can lead to weight loss. I would wake up, or come to, and crave the greasiest food to settle my stomach, and didn’t feel like moving after having a heavy meal and probably had a headache so I would stay in bed all day. After getting sober, I would go to bed early and wake up early feeling great. I had so much time in the day that I could finally say yes to trying new things that I always wanted to do or try. Hiking, Yoga, Swimming and going to the gym became my new healthy hobbies. A healthy lifestyle is a natural byproduct of sobriety.

3. Relationships Improve

This quote from the Big Book wonderfully describes one of the gifts we get when we stay sober. “Self seeking will slip away, our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.” Once you get sober and start working on yourself and recovery, you will become less interested in being selfish, and more interested in helping others.

“When I was drinking, I was never fully present. I couldn’t sit in my own thoughts and emotions so I would check out with drinking, or when I wasn’t drinking I was on my phone or just checked out. It wasn’t good for my family. Now that I am sober, I can be present and show up for my family, friends, and myself” – Carrie, Sober Since 2020

Now, I can remember the things I say in an argument or discussion and won’t have to apologize for things I don’t remember saying. Communication improves, so an improved relationship follows.

The benefits of sobriety are endless!

My whole life has improved in every single area, and it will for you too!
