Sobriety Affirmations

11 Great Affirmations for Sobriety

“Affirmations are positive, specific statements that help you to overcome self-sabotaging negative thoughts. They help you visualize, and believe in, what you are affirming to yourself, helping you to make positive changes to your life and career.”- Mindtools

In addition to the vision boards and visualization tools use to aid in sobriety, you’ll want to affirm in words your sobriety. We have on average sixty-six thousand thoughts per day, most of which are negative. We don’t even notice them. They are conditioned in your mind for so many years that you are probably not even aware of your self-talk. If you grew up in a household where you were called stupid most of the time, then you probably have an unconscious thought pattern calling yourself stupid. It might be when you forget your cell phone in the house or leave the TV on while walking out of the room. If we are constantly affirming to ourselves that we are stupid or unworthy or losers, then we will start to act that way, and it shows up in all areas of our lives.

Why Affirmations?

Creating powerful affirmations specifically around the goals you set, in this case, sobriety, will help you achieve those goals. If your goal is to be sober, then one of your affirmations might be this:

I am amazing at being healthy maintaining my sobriety

How many times have you gone to a restaurant to eat and left drunk? You can repeat this affirmation before you go and while you go to eat and don’t order a drink. If you affirm over and over in your mind that you are a badass, then you will walk taller and more confidently. If affirming over and over that you are stupid, then you will slouch, be less confident, and appear weak. You show the world the way you think and talk about yourself.

How to Create Powerful Affirmations

  1. Review your goals, and create affirmations around your goals.
  2. Write your affirmations in present tense.
  3. Avoid negative words. Rather than thinking, I do not get nervous around people, change it to I am confident around people.
  4. Keep affirmations short enough to memorize and recite.
  5. Write down your affirmations, have them on your phone, and recite them throughout the day.
  6. Make the affirmations powerful to evoke feelings of excitement.
